70cms is also being activated in Slovenia. Milos S57D has been active on the band using FM on three occasions with a total of 9 QSOs, including S2S with S57GB and S53MN (on different summits) on 9th November from Partizanski vrh (Kotlic) S5/CP-004. These contacts were part of multiband activations by Milos who is better known to us in the UK on 7MHz and 14MHz SSB. The 70cms activity table for Slovenia is headed by Zvone S57OPZ and Sabina S57BNX who carried out a number of multiband activations during the month, mainly on 2m FM and 40m SSB. 5 FM contacts on 70cms made their logs. Let us hope that there are more contacts in the coming months.

To je že drugič v treh dneh, da se moj znak narobe zapiše verjamem, da pomotoma.

Uh, šele sedaj, ko si ti napisal sem opazil, da je tvoj znak res narobe napisan. Če bi delal več na KVju in bi te Angleži bolje poznali, se ta neprijetnost sigurno ne bi zgodila. Verjetno smo malo krivi tudi ostali omenjeni, saj imamo vsi v svojem znaku sedmico, potem pa so jo avtomatično napisali tudi v tvoj pozivni znak. Predlagam, da kontaktiraš avtorja prispevka na angleški strani in se dogovoriš za popravek.

Še zmeraj imam v prijetnem spominu omenjeno zvezo, saj si imel z Mokrca zelo dober signal, čeprav si delal na 144MHz anteno. Jaz sem imel na drugi strani samo Diamond dual band vertikalko priključeno direktno na BNC konektor postaje.

After setting the scene last month, I am pleased to see an increase in interest in 70cms for SOTA activations, particularly on FM. While I personally tend to specialise in SSB on the band, it is a simple thing to try FM as there are a large amount of rigs in use for SOTA that cover the band. A simple coaxial colinear or a slim jim attached to the mast should provide reasonable results, though it is always worth a try just with the rubber duck antenna supplied with the rig if homebrew is not your thing. Usually such antennas are less of a compromise at 433MHz than on lower frequencies.

I was encouraged to receive an email from Andy S53MN during the month. He told me that the group of activators that are using 70cms in Slovenia are very proud of what they have achieved on the band. Andy activated Lubnik S5/CP-012 on 14th December making 2 QSOs on the band, Dobrca S5/KA-023 on Christmas Day making an excellent 6 contacts and a further contact from Smledniski hrib S5/CP-035 on 28th.

I can thoroughly recommend a look at the excellent activation reports prepared by Milos S57D. The links for these are listed under the heading of “S57D/P SOTA activations” in the Reflector section of the SOTAwatch website. Milos often operates with Sabina S57BNX and Zvone S57OPZ and together they have made many 70cms FM QSOs, 23 of these being from Malenski vrh S5/CP-009 on 21st December.

Dejan S56WDN/P has been extremely active during the month and has activated no less than 10 summits. The best activation as far as 70cms was concerned was on 18th December from Grmada S5/CP-028 when he made 8 contacts. It is good to see Dejan regularly posting alerts for the band on SOTAwatch. Jure S57XX/P used 70cms from Begunjscica S5/KA-007 on 27th December making 4 contacts and Milan S58MU/P made 5 contacts from Pasjaravan S5/CP-011 the same day. I noted Dejan had alerted for that summit so I assume the operation was a joint activation, though I cannot confirm this at the time of writing, as Dejan has not yet added his log to the database.

Last month I was pleased to be able to report quite a few new callsigns in the news. This month, the number of callsigns on the database has expanded considerably, largely as a result of the activity days in Slovenia earlier in the month. No fewer than 12 S5 new callsigns have appeared. Many operators had not previously carried out any 70cms activations and I therefore hope that their interest has been whetted and further activity will be forthcoming throughout the year.

So where do I start on reporting the activations in Slovenia? Well, my attention was drawn to several alerts placed on the SOTA website by Jazbec S52RR for a series of activations on Kuk S5/TK-012. Up to the time of writing he had made no less than 7 visits resulting in up to 5 contacts on 70cms FM on any one occasion. Also in the TK area, Herman S57ONW carried out an activation of Sredja gora S5/TK-011 on 14th February and one week later on 21st February was on Javornik S5/TK-013, this time with Mirko S59Z and Jurij S57X who is often heard on HF. A total of 11 contacts were made.

A visit to Sivka S5/TK-022 was made by Milos S57D, Sabina S57BNX and Zvone S57OPZ on 20th February. They have been out as a team on several occasions since the end of January when they activated Koprivnik S5/CP-005 making 4 contacts each. An excellent 10 contacts apiece were made from Krim S5/RG-010 on 14th February which was followed the next day by a visit to Blegos S5/CP-003, with them individually making up to 7 contacts. Other activations were from Pasja ravan S5/CP-011 on 21st February with 4 contacts each and at the time of writing the team had alerted for Tosc S5/CP-013 on 28th February. The team split for other activations during the month with Milos going to Vrh Staneta Kosca {Rasica} S5/CP-031 on 26th where he made 8 contacts and Sabina and Zvone activated Malenski vrh S5/CP-009 on 22nd February making 3 contacts each.

Other activations in the CP area during the month were carried out by Andy S53MN on the summits of Tosc S5/CP-013 on 1st February (6 contacts) and Vrh Staneta Kosca {Rasica} S5/CP-031 on 20th February (5 contacts). Andy has alerted for Alternaver S5/CP-001 on 28th February. Miha S54KM was on Vrhovcev gric S5/CP-010 on 14th February and Koprivnik S5/CP-005 on 20th February, with an alert in place for Porezen S5/CP002 on 28th February. Dejan S56WDN appears to have been out with Miha and is alerted for the Porezen activation, though at the time of writing he had not placed his logs on the database. The summit of Osolnik S5/CP-022 was activated by Bojan S56LXN on 20th February with 6 contacts being made. The Lesce Radio Club callsign S59UAR was used on the summit of Jost nad Kranjen S5/CP-023 on 21st February with 7 contacts being made on 70cms, but I have no details as to who operated the station.

The popular summit of Pasja ravan S5/CP-011 was activated by Miran S56UBS on 15th February with 6 contacts being made on the band. Further CP activity was carried out on Strmec S5/CP-020 by Slavko S53XX who made 5 contacts. Slavko also activated Kosutica S5/KA-008 on 20th February where he made 3 contacts. Another KA area activation was by Andrej S50TA (a call made for SOTA if ever there was one) on Begunjscica (Veliki vrh) S5/KA-007 on 14th February with 6 contacts being made.

Two activations took place on 70cms in the BR area, both on 15th February. Tom S56G made 3 contacts from Poljane S5/BR-028 which included an S2S with the other activation by Kostja S56KM on Mali Ovcnjak S5/BR-025. The final activation to report on is that carried out by Marjan S56JAZ who activated Reber S5/BI-017 with 4 contacts made. All the contacts within Slovenia were made on FM and many were S2S resulting from the large amount of activity undertaken.

With respect to SOTA summits, the highest level of 70cms activity continues to be in Slovenia. I was amazed to see that Dejan S56WDN has been carrying out several activations just using the 70cms and 4m bands! Presumably he has one of the excellent Wouxun handheld rigs for 4m – I speak from experience of the rig, but would still not want to rely upon either band to give me qualification of a summit. On 70cms, Dejan made a total of 12 contacts on FM from 6 summits between 13th and 25th March. Two activations were carried out from Blegos S5/CP-003 and others from Gabrška gora S5/CP-017, Malenski vrh S5/CP-009, Goli vrh S5/TK-023 and Vrhovcev gric S5/CP-010.

Bojan S56LXN was one to make an S2S contact with Dejan while he was on Slatnik S5/JA-035, this being made from Smledniški hrib S5/CP-035 on 1st March. Marjan S56JAZ activated Spilk S5/KS-043 on 1st March making 4 contacts on FM and he too had an S2S with Dejan on Slatnik. I note that Dejan has not yet entered his log for this activation. Anyway, Marjan was active again on 7th March from Vivodnick S5/KS-028, this time making an excellent 13 contacts using SSB. I note also that he was active on 23cms as well on 7th March, another band that finds favour with me. The following day, regular HF SOTA operator Milos S53X also used 70cms SSB to make 11 contacts from Veliko Gradišce S5/BR-021. Slavko S53XX was also active on 8th March from Slatnik S5/JA-035 making 4 contacts on FM and Miha S54KM made another 4 on FM from Blegoš S5/CP-003 the same day.

Andy S53MN has also been very active on the band activating Mokrc S5/RG-016 and Krim S5/RG-010 on 7th March and Crni vrh S5/BI-002 and Kum S5/BI-001 on 28th March, making a total of 14 contacts. Zvone S57OPZ carried out an activation on Bevkov vrh S5/TK-020 on 8th March making 10 contacts on FM. As many may know, Zvone is without his regular activation partners Milos S57D and Sabina S57BNX as Sabina had a skiing accident early in the month when she hurt her leg. The Summitsbase team send her our best wishes and we hope that she is soon fit enough to be out in the hills.

My investigation of the database turned up some late log entries. The first was for Milan S58MU who activated Špicasti vrh S5/TK-016 and Špik S5/TK-019 on 26th February making a total of 11 contacts on FM. Also active at the end of February was Lukas S57LU who activated Grmada S5/CP-028 on 27th February and Vrh Staneta Kosca (Rašica) S5/CP-031 on 28th February. The second entry is from a note that I made of a spot since the activation has not yet been recorded.

The Slovenian activators have again been out in force this month with many of them including 1 or 2 contacts on the band in their logs. Top honours go to Zvone S57OPZ who activated Gabrška gora S5/CP-017 on 5th April and Kucelj S5/CP-021 on 13th April, making 7 and 6 contacts respectively from these two summits. On 5th April, Zvone was in demand, making S2S contacts with Jure S57XX on Sveti Trije Kralji S5/TK-025 and Milos S57D and Sabina S57BNX who were out on the summits again after Sabina’s accident. They were activating Jance S5/BI-029 with just 2 contacts for 70cms in their logs. Hopefully Sabina is well on the road to making a full recovery.

On 3rd April Miha S54KM was on the summit of Sveti Trije Kralji S5/TK-025, making 4 contacts on the band. Others active during the month were Jure S57X and Pavle S51GF on the summit of Sivka S5/TK-022 on 19th making 2 contacts each. Andy S53MN activated Smledniški hrib S5/CP-035 on 5th April, Marjan S56IHX activated Nebeška gora S5/BI-008 on 11th and Mitja S56WPF activated Nebeška gora S5/BI-008, also on 11th April, all with just a single FM contact made on these occasions.

Rather more successful was newcomer Darko S57AX who was on the summit of Dobrca S5/KA-023 on 12th April when he made 3 contacts on the band. Most active in terms of the number of activations during April was Miran S56UBS who was out on 3 summits in 3 areas - Goteniški Snežnik S5/RG-001 on 7th April, Pugled S5/BI-048 on 11th and Kržišce (Pokovše) S5/KS-021 on 27th, but with a total of just 4 70cms contacts between these three. Nothing was recorded by Dejan S56WDN this month, but I feel certain that I have seen spots for him, so all may be revealed in due course.

Over the past few months I have been considering how best to present this column. While I have tried to present the facts in a reasonably easy to read style, I feel that it is still a slog through facts and figures. I have tried to present every scrap of information in an effort not to leave anyone out, but this has probably resulted in an unwieldy article. Therefore I have decided to adopt a somewhat different approach. Now that we have three main areas of activity – the UK, Slovenia and Germany (Low Mountains), I am splitting the report into sections so you can focus on the news from your particular area if you so wish.

The International SOTA Weekend

Fortunate enough to be out on both days of the ISW, Milos S57D and Sabina S57BNX activated Limbarska gora S5/BI-033 on 2nd May and Obolno S5/BI-031 on 3rd May. Just one contact was made from each of these summits.

Slovenia

The number of recorded contacts in Slovenia dropped considerably this month. There seems to be a lot of interest in the 4m and 6m bands, possibly due to the Sporadic E season now being upon us. Maybe 70cms will have a resurgence later in the year.

As well as the activations by Milos and Sabina over the International SOTA Weekend, they were out once again on 17th May. This time they were on the summit of Šmarjetna gora S5/CP-030 from where they made 2 contacts on FM. Other 70cms contacts made during the month were all made from the summit of Vrh Korena S5/KS-013. On 10th May Marjan S56JAZ made a single contact on FM and on 25th May, Zvone S57OPZ worked 4 stations.

Those that have been following this column will appreciate that there are three main areas of activity – G/GW, DM (Low Mountains) and S5. The use of 70cms in these areas remains strong, but it has to be realised that what is strength for 70cms would be a weakness for other bands. 70cms remains a minority pastime, an add-on, a response to a request to try a higher frequency. It is therefore pleasing to see a steady increase in the number of activators that have used the band this year. In addition, we now have 3 activators in Norway that have given the band a try out.

Slovenia

Again the number of recorded contacts in Slovenia is well down this month. Continuing interest in the Sporadic E season seems to be partly responsible. Despite this, 7 activators made contacts on the band, 3 of them being new entrants onto the database. In all, 13 summits were activated and all contacts were made using FM.

Zvone S57OPZ continues to be the top Slovenian activator using 70cms. He activated Pasja ravan S5/CP-011 on 13th June with 2 contacts and Sveti Trije Kralji S5/TK-025 with 5 contacts on 21st June. This latter activation included an S2S with Milos S57D/P who was activating Ulovka S5/TK-028. Milos’ log includes a number of S2S contacts. Milos was also out on 18th June from Velika Kopa S5/PK-002 and he worked Sabina S57BNX from that summit.

Marjan S56IHX activated two summits on 14th June – Veliki Rogatec S5/KS-027 from which he made 4 contacts and Kranjska Reber S5/KS-029 from which he made just one. Darko S57AX also carried out two activations, but on separate days: on 6th June he was on Velika Slivnica S5/RG-009 and on 27th June Plece S5/KA-027, a single contact being made from each summit. Jurij S57AJJ was with him and also made contacts on the band.

Sergey S51ZJ entered the database with six contacts from Veliki Javornik S5/BR-005 on 14th June and another contact from Lonica S5/BR-008 on 21st June. The latter contact was with another new entrant on the database, S53IZ who was on Gradišce S5/BR-032.

Slovenia

Use of 70cms in Slovenia has definitely slowed down during the summer months. There were a total of 8 new entries when I looked at the database, three of which were for 21st June. On that day Miran S56UBS activated Gora (Sveti Ahac) S5/RG-038 making 2 contacts on SSB. Milos S53X activated Tošc S5/CP-013 and S53IZ activated Gradišce S5/BR-032, both making a single contact on FM.

On 4th July Kostja S56KM activated Osojnica S5/BR-018 and made 9 contacts on SSB in the contest. The remaining 4 activations recorded in the database were all for 12th July - Aco S52Q activated Debela pec S5/JA-029 and made an excellent 6 contacts on FM; Jurij S57XX activated Vivodnik S5/KS-028 and Janko S56RPJ and Jože S56VJM activated Stene Svete Ane S5/RG-022, all three of them working S57D for a single contact on the band.
