From February 1st to 15th, I2YSB and friends will be doing a DXpedition from Moucha Island, which is IOTA AF-053. Silvano is an experienced Dxpedition operator, a fine CW operator and a great QSL manager. These seven guys should provide lots of excitement on the bands.
The team will be using good beams and linear amplifiers on the higher bands, and verticals on the lower bands. they should be workable..
Internet access is not available on the DXpedition island. To update the log on line it will be necessary to sail to the mainland. Furthermore, Internet connection is very slow in Djibouti, but they will try to update the log on line every 3 - 4 days.
The economy of Djibouti is based on service activities connected with the country's strategic location and status as a free trade zone in northeast Africa. Two-thirds of the inhabitants live in the capital city, the remainder being mostly nomadic herders. Scant rainfall limits crop production to fruits and vegetables and most food must be imported.
Djibouti provides services as both a transit port for the region and an international transshipment and refueling center. It has few natural resources and little industry. The nation is, therefore, heavily dependent on foreign assistance to help support its balance of payments and to finance development projects. An unemployment rate of 40% to 50% continues to be a major problem. inflation is not a concern, however, because of the fixed tie of the French franc to the US dollar. Per capita consumption dropped an estimated 35% over the last seven years because of recession, civil war, and a high population growth rate (including immigrants and refugees). Also, renewed fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea has disturbed normal external channels of commerce. Faced with a multitude of economic difficulties, the government has fallen into arrears on long-term external debt and has been struggling to meet the stipulations of foreign aid donors.
The Republic of Djibouti gained its independence in 1977. It is the successor to French Somaliland which was created in the first half of the nineteenth century as a result of French interest in Africa. However, the history of Djibouti, recorded in poetry and songs of its nomadic peoples, goes back thousands of years. Djibouti is a Muslim country which regularly takes part in Islamic as well as Arab meetings
Djibouti has strong French connections, and is served by air from Paris.
Djibouti is in Eastern Africa, bordering the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, between Eritrea and Somalia. Its coordinates are 11°30′N 43°00′E.
Djibouti shares a 70 mile border with Eritrea, 209 mile with Ethiopia and 36 mile with Somalia . It also has 195 miles of coastline.
