Samo Bojan in Slavc sta imela čas biti zraven .... CUL Danilo, S50U

The preliminary scores for the 2005 Stew Perry contest may be viewed here: http://web.jzap.com/k7rat/stew-2005.txt

(Wouldn't the world be a better place if we didn't have to say "WWW" so often and could just say "web"?). If anyone's score is really wrong, in the wrong category, or missing - please contact me directly. I will have the full writeup posted in a couple of weeks. Also - if there were any USA operators under the age of 20, who made at least 100 QSOs - please let me know as there is an unclaimed plaque. 73 Tree N6TR

The tenth Stew Perry TBDC contest was the biggest of them all. We received 479 logs - which is a big jump in activity - and the scores keep going up and up. The improved conditions from the sunspot minimum were evident, although they still were not up to the excellent conditions we saw during the first couple of events. It would seem the stage is set for the eleventh one to smash all records - as this season's conditions seem to be getting off to a good start. Clive, GM3POI, who ran away with the first couple of Stews, seems to be warming up with four QSOs in the N6TR log already this season. There were some soapbox comments about the minimum off time. We used to have a rule that tried to make you take your off time in one or two big chunks - so you did not have to operate during the daytime in order to feel like you were competitive. After trying to make the rule easy to understand, we finally gave up and removed it. However, not having a rule seems to create just as much confusion - so we have decided to make a simple rule that should clear it up: Operate for a maximum of 14 hours. Off times are 30 minutes minimum and a maximum of four off periods are permitted.Hopefully that will be the last time we have to tweak the off time rule. We were pleased with how the 2X and 4X multipliers worked out for LP and QRP stations that you worked in your log. This seemed to close most of the gap between the power levels. This will become a permanent rule change. Don't miss the soapbox comments at the end of this write-up. While we didn't have a plaque for the best whine this time, there were some worthy entries submitted. One of the most talked about aspects of this contest is the plaque program, administered by Lew Sayre, W7EW and enabled by the generosity of the plaque sponsors themselves. We typically have some off beat categories that enable those without the "best signal on the band" to get some hardwood. This year was no exception with awards for search and pounce only, sending less than 18 WPM and the best DX within 30 minutes of local noon. Here are the plaque winners. Most of these have already been sent out, but a few of them had some problems with the engraver, and will be sent out in November. If you are aware of any errors, please contact tree@kkn.net. We do not give out more than one plaque per station. Many thanks to all of the sponsors.

And now for the scores. Each line item indicates the category (S or M for single/multi-op), Power (H, L or Q), the grid operated from. The RAW QSO total is the number of QSOs found in the log. Dupes and busts are removed for the QSO total. The total QSO points is in the PTS column and the number of grids worked in GRD. The best DX callsign and distance is shown. Finally, the number of QRP and Low power stations worked is shown. The QRP stations you work get a X4 multiplier and the low power stations get a X2 multiplier. QRP and low power stations are determined by the logs we received - so you won't get this bonus just by putting /QRP in a callsign. Line scores that are in bold will receive a certificate. Stations that received a plaque are not eligible for certificates. Our thanks go out to Jim, K1PX, for generating the list of certificate winners, printing and mailing the certificates.

Encouraged by good conditions into JA one day before, I decided to take part in the SP_2005. - DL1AMQ

Condx not extraordinary, but quite OK. JH4UYB was heard very loud before sunset but station was not ready at that time. Caught him later quite easily. Also another four JAs made it into the log. Nice surprise was being called by DU9/N0NM and later by VK6VZ/6 at his sunrise. Found DU9 later calling CQ in vain for a while. I hope he got a few callers as he was loud. Heard VQ9LA very nicely too but he only called a few stations (and I was not among them). North America opened early and by 00z the band was in full swing. Most western station worked was N0AC in IA. K0HA was heard pretty well around 0630z but could not raise his attention. Win-Test lets you see a map to grids worked. This way I found that SN2N initially sent wrong grid JO68 (which was in Sweden), but later he corrected it to JO94. 9A contest activity merged into the Stew Perry challenge. Many stations have both QSO number and grid locator. TF4M refused to give a locator and sent only 599 so I did not work him. CU in 2006! - DL6RAI worked with 30Watt and 23m longwire - DL7BA

Only a token entry this year. I had intended to do a serious entry but the band was not very inspiring and I soon lost interest. But am happy to allow those I did work to gain the extra points from a QRP station. 73 Dave - G3YMC

First time entry and had nice relaxing few hours. Band conditions no great shakes considering the state of Sunspot Cycle. Used my 40m corner fed delta loop as rx ant and it certainly helped pull a few weak ones out of the mud. Antenna is top fed (loaded whip)ontop of 60ft vertical. Radio is an Icom 746Pro. Pity this contest is held during the hectic holiday shopping/events period of the year and I'm sure doing so restricts the number of potential entries. I suppose you can't please all the folks all the time. Used N1MMLogger software and found the bandmaps very useful for going back to busy stations and picking them up at a later time. I will be back for next years event and hope to do an improved score then. HNY to all de Vic G4BYG - G4BYG

My first time in the SPTC and great fun. The nicest surprise was VK6VZ/6 calling me. This contest reminded my a lot to the VHF contest I used to participate in my early ham-days: not too much activity, interesting exchanges and propagation surprised. But then many fields didn't sound familiar at all :-) 73, Stephan HB9DDO

I have been participated on this contest since the first time. I participated on LowPower SingleOp. The condition was very poor in this year. I could QSO with only 3 U.S.A. stations. But I could QSO with Africa VQ9LA! His signal was very strong 599+! This season, in east Asia area, we had a very heavy jamming (OTH radar?) from BY (military use?) in November. But it stopped until middle of November. I used M.V. (micro vert) antenna by DF7PE which built on my condominium's balcony. It was only 3.6m length! - JE1SPY

Disappointed about the poor conditions for US, while feel so nice to be picked up by VQ9LA. - JE1TSD

Output power 50watts - JH1GVY

Great Contest - JH4UYB

My first SPC. What fun!!! I finished constructing the 160 board for my K2 Saturday afternoon. I was running 5 watts to a 75' wire ten feet off the ground - K0OK

AA1K is in the log twice, once as mobile and once fixed. Two different stations, not a dupe. My station consists of a stealth wire run up a pine tree and over to another pine tree. I live in a condo, so technically, my lot is 0 sq ft. However, my antenna certainly fits into a 20M by 10M space, as my radials are barely 50' long. I also made 135 QSO's in RAC if that counts for anything. - K1EP

It was great to work so many of my 160 Meter friends again in this year's Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge. Conditions were pretty good at my FM18 (Maryland) QTH. Had planned to put up a separate receive antenna but too many family related chores got in the way. The trusty vertical transmit antenna once again did double duty. Fortunately the QRN level was reasonably low during most of the Challenge. Running 100W I managed to work 22 DX stations in 17 countries: S5, ON, P4, LY, FM, F(2), SP(2), OK, DL, UA, KP4(2), OH, PJ2, SM(2), GM(2), UA2 & CU. DX Conditions in the 2003 SPDXC (missed the 2004...was recuperating from a fall from roof) seemed a bit better than this year's Challenge. Only a relatively few NA stations were heard calling CQ in the DX Window. Although the rules didn't prohibit this practice, most of the Topbanders adhered to the gentleman's agreement and only answered DX stations in the window. Unfortunately those that insisted on CQing there QRMed the weak DX, making it difficult, if not impossible for many from working some of the DX. Maybe in the next SPDXC rules there should be a reference to the Window. Overall it was a great competition and continues to be one of my favorites. - K1HTV

FT-1000, AL-1500 and 160M dipole at 90. Conditions were good early (2000Z) from Virginia. Noted very strong roaring noise all over the band beginning - K1KO

On the 3830 list, a number of stations reported that conditions to Europe were good from 2300-0100, then faded until around 0500. I, too, observed these conditions. However, I've always assumed that this was the normal pattern, based on about 30 consecutive ARRL 160 tests. I don't do much casual operating. There were two mystery signals around 1200. First, while CQing, I got called by a station that had "VK" and "DX" in the call. But, at the time, the signal was very weak and I could not find the right antenna on which to listen. It was not until around 1300 when I heard VK6DXI working N2IC (I hope I'm not mis-remembering which N2) that I realized who "VK" and "DX" was. Naturally, at 1300, VK6DXI was plainly audible. Oh well, what's 37 points? The second mystery signal was "VV" and "7". I'm presuming that was VE7VV calling me, and again, I could not find the right antenna. Now that VE7VV is burned into my memory, I shouldn't have that problem again. Since he was QRP, that's another 28 points missed. Oops. While in contests it's great to get into a top ten box, I'm really competing with my self. This year, I had more points that any previous year, so I must declare success, even though I had fewer QSOs. How does one qualify for the "antenna less than 40 feet" plaque? My transmitting antenna is a 40 foot wire with a "T" top. The "T" top is about 180 feet long. Since the antenna wire is taped to a piece of rope strung between trees 500 feet apart, its a bit difficult to get the center of the T aligned perfectly with the middle of the radial system (60 radials before I mowed the area the last time). So, the 40 foot wire slants about 15 degrees, which means the overall height is somewhat less than 40 feet. I'm crossing my fingers. See everyone in the CQ 160. - K1LT

I had great fun for 8 hours. 160 was in decent shape. Icom IC-765 @ 100 watts using 160M Inverted Vee & 450' "L" - K2ZR

A more conventional certificate system (highest 10 percent in each U.S. call area for high and low power) would increase participation. My antenna is 41 feet high. - K3MD

CO2JD did not send his grid number I deleted the QSO better conditions to Europe than I recall in this event. No Pacific for me. - K3WW

S & P Only - K4IQJ

QRP Entry - Orion @ 4 watts/500 foot loop at 45 feet. - K4QO

Wish I could have operated more this year. Activity sounded pretty good the short time I was on. Thanks to Tree, Lew, and the crew who make this happen. - K4RO

First time entry. Most likely not the last! - K4WW

100% S&P with 100 watts. Great fun. - K5KA

Entered the Search and Pounce Category only. - K5NA

Interesting contest as always. Activity seemed a bit better than last year. Conditions to Europe were good - wish there was more activity! Mostly worked Northern Eu. The Southern Eu stations all had some kind of hollow flutter sound and were not as strong. Some stations peaked right at their sunrise, but most were loudest 1-2 hours before SR. My best DX was N6KB/KH6 at 10 mins after my sunrise (at least I hope he is my best DX as the QSO was a bit dodgy with all the QSB and weak signals).
Will be back again next year! I still don't understand why a contest focused on distance provides so much incentive for stations to run low power or QRP!! - K5ZD

VK6VZ Entry Small Space ("Isotron") Antenna - 1' X 1' X 8' felt in the running until antenna blew down in storm. Ugh. - K6OWL

160m condx were what I would call perhaps a bit below normal. As usual, I enjoyed the contest a lot. - K6SE

My first Stew-Perry Top Band DX Challenge. I found the Contest Rules confusing ... RST + Grid or just the Grid? My Contest Moment occurred when ON4UN told Europe to Standby while he dug me out of the noise ... my first ON on 160 Meters. - K7CMZ

Great fun operating from QTH of K7CA with fantastic vertical antenna array. - K7NJ

Spent about 10.5 hours in this one. Conditons were good, with AK and JA stations worked, but no EU. I was able to double my QSO's from last year, but not the score. Thanks to Tree and the gang for this one. - K7RE

First Stew contest.. Lots of fun. - K7TJR

IC746, 70W, 35' Tall INV L (only 5 RADIALS + ground rod) Improvements to ant Worked well. Heard a lot more than I was able to work with 70W from an ailing IC-746. - K7XC

Propagation was a little worse than usual at this southern Colorado location. I actually did a little worse this year than last. Even with 5 Beverages (antennas) I only heard France and Belgium in Europe (maybe I should have had the other beverages!). By 3am local the band had totally dried out and I went to bed. I had good intentions to try to catch some JA's but alas the sandman had a good grip on me and I missed the opening. As usual, this is a great operating event, really enjoy the format. See you all next year, happy holidays. - Joe K8FC

Band Conditions Good from Eastern West Virginia and Enjoyed Using EI5DI SD Logging Program for the first time--easy straight-forward usage. - K8OQL

I was going to run QRO and work all the DX but then thought I would try a few QRP contacts first just to see how the band was and got hooked! - K9FO

Great to be back in the Stew! - K9GY

Activity seemed light this year. - K9WWT

My first 160M contest. Only had a couple of hours to operate, and ant is only a shorted feedline to a small inverted vee, but still fun. - KB1CJ

I was going to start out complaining about how there was no "Whine award" sponsored this year, but I figured there was no point since it wasn't sponsored. I was also going to go on a rant about how my wife got a new puppy on the day of the Stew and how the distraction made things very difficult to effectively operate the contest. Again, no point of pontificating about things that no longer really matter. The Stew: What can I say, my fellow operators? The Stew was a fantastic experience for me this year. With the sponsoring of the S&P award, it made for a lot more stations look for me while I lazily sat on freq running weak ones. Speaking of weak ones, there were a lot more this year. Either people are using the QRP mult or they are trying to win that category from that awesome guy who is sponsoring the award for short verticals under 40 feet tall. He sure was a smart guy for sponsoring that award! As for me, I don't happen to qualify because my antenna is 40 feet, 1 inch tall. But all of the radials and antenna fit into a space 20m X 10m so maybe I have a shot of that spiffy Flying Doctors of Australia hat that VK6VZ offers every year! I wish someone would sponsor an award for a replacement of an RX antenna switch because I wore mine out last night. I guess that is a good sign that everything is hearing in the direction that it is supposed to. I gave up early because I was extremely tired but I did improve my score and QSO totals from previous years by just a little bit so it was worth it. Listening on topband, even with quiet conditions and rx antennas is still a little fatiguing, especailly when you are having to really dig. I always enjoy this contest and hope it continues for a long, long time. See you in the Stew 2006.. I'll be sure to bring a little extra meat! Special thanks to all the organizers and sponsors! - KB5NJD

Came within a gnat's whisker of working Europe QRP, but it wasn't to be this time around. I had lots of fun anyway. Hope to work you all in next year's Stew. - KB8U

My first Stew Perry contest. Very enjoyable. I very much like the scoring/grid exchange. It's a challenge running qrp with just a wire antenna but I'm amazed at how well it works. Thanks to all for digging out my signal. Some of you really earned the bonus points. 160 is a great band. I wish it always had such activity. I think conditions weren't quite as good to the south as during the 160M contest earlier in the month. My best DX was SM5EDX although I wasn't able to work him. - KD2MX

TOO MUCH NOISE TO MAKE A SERIOUS EFFORT. THE STEW IS ALWAYS FUN ANYWAY - KI7Y

Had family Xmas at our place, so got a late start. Made a few QSOs just to show up. - KJ9C

NICE EU OPENING - WORKED MORE EU WITH LP THAN IN ARRL WITH HP - NEW BEVERAGE ON ICE HELPED A LOT WITH THE QRN FROM THE SNOWSTORM TO THE SE - BEST ACTIVITY LEVEL EVER - TNX TO ALL THE BORING GUYS - KK9K

LOTS OF FUN. FT817 TO 1/2 WAVE WIRE WITH CENTER AT 45 FEET AND ENDS AT SIX FEET. CLEARS THE ROOF OF THE HOUSE BY ABOUT FOUR FEET. HEARD LOTS OF DX BUT NOBODY HEARD ME. GOES WITH THE TERRITORY. ABOUT 8 HOURS OF ON TIME. SAME AS LAST YEAR, BEST DX = K7CA WHILE K7RAT CQ'ED IN MY FACE EVERY TIME (AS DID KC7V). :-) MX ES HNY AND TNX FOR THE FUN ACTIVITY! - KR2Q

FT1000D AT 5 WATTS TO FULL WAVE DELTA LOOP APEX 150 FT. (@KR0B) - KS0T

GREAT FUN, THANKS FOR PULL OUT MY QRP SIGNAL. - KT0R

Unfortunately, pre-holiday activities kept me from putting in the late night hours, but conditions seemed great here: loud signals, low QRN. Lots of fun! - KX7L*

Nice contest! 73! - LY2OO

Conditions seemed to be pretty good with my low-power CQs getting calls from as far away as New England. High winds caused a nearby power pole to act up intermittently all night though, so the noise blanker and DSP got a workout. Nice to see the band full of signals from regulars and casual entrants. - N0AX

Eighty meter dipole worked well. Heard ON4UN. - N0JL

Always a great contest - N0XB

All S & P. - N1DG

Sat out last year's session due to family duties. Only one I missed since the beginning. Good to be back this year though without Beverages and with an inverted L that is in the most bizarre configuration one could imagine. - N1MD

I enjoyed my first Stew Perry contest! My thanks to all organizers. - N2ES

FUN! Beat my last years score by 57 points. Seventy-three more Q's but less DX. 26 Europeans last year and only 19 total DX contacts this year. Strange didn't work a G or DL. Lots of QRN all night here in the South. Sounded like it was summertime again. - N4PN

During the 2005 Stew Perry Top Band Distance Challenge N5OT never transmitted at a speed greater than 18 wpm. - N5OT

All QSOs made using a single inverted L antenna, for both transmit and receive, supported only by palm trees on a 1/3rd acre house lot. The antenna is inside an area of less than 20m x 10m. - N6KB

S&P Only - 18WPM - N6TR

First contest using N1MM Logger. Lost some Q's due to operator error! - N7IR

Operating from K8MK for this one. Jim has a great antenna. - N8VW

I 'Reserved' the 2005 SPTBDC weekend with my wife months ahead of time -- and in November our plans 'changed' so that we'd be away that weekend skiing in Whistler, BC, with her father. We'd be leaving during the contest day on Saturday, arriving at the ski area about dusk. A week before the Stew, I scrambled to find a station that would allow me to operate in BC, and was able to do so -- thanks Bob Eldridge VE7BS, only about 45 mins from the ski area. Three days before the contest an inspiration hits me that perhaps I can just run my home station remotely through the internet; I make sure the firewall is set up, get a dynamic DNS entry, install some software to manage the dynamic address, and set up a RealVNC server on the laptop controlling the computer. I set up two free VOIP accounts, and use VOIP Soft-phones on my laptop at home, and the one I'm taking with me. I spend Wednesday night testing. I use a USB relay control interface (Ontrak ADU-200) to control an Ameritron RCS-10 switch to allow changing the receive antennas under computer control. THE ADU 200 even has a watchdog timer function! I modify the nice Windows application to control the antenna switches, watchdog, and PTT. I test it... a lot. I call the Hotel on Thursday to verify that they have high speed internet, and they do. I use the setup on Friday night, testing to make sure there are no RF problems with the internet connections etc. On Saturday morning, I work the first 1.5 hours of the contest until the band shuts down (last station heard (but not worked
