QSL survey: CW still top for DX
What modes are most commonly used on the DX bands? An
interesting insight comes from an analysis of QSL cards passing
through the VK1 QSL Bureau.
CW remained most popular, accounting for 53 per cent of contacts.
SSB was next with 34 per cent. Digital modes accounted for the
remainder, with PSK-31 accounting for nearly all of it.
Whether CW or SSB is dominant depends on whether the country
worked is English-speaking. For countries such as the UK, US and
New Zealand more than two-thirds of contacts were SSB. In
contrast CW was dominant for non-English speaking countries.
Despite PSK-31 being a language-based text mode, its use was
spread evenly across the countries worked.
